The war on plastic bags has been raging violently ever since the introduction of the 5p a bag M&S charge was introduced. Waitrose donâ??t give you plastic bags unless you ask for them (though do try to hard-sell you a bag for life), Tesco give you green points for using alternatives and almost all of the big names offer jutes at the checkout. All well and good, and a step in the right direction, but letâ??s face facts folks â?? the own brand bags are just damn ugly. And wondering around with supermarket branding slapped all over your shopper leaves little to be desired! So, in the name of style conscious greenies everywhere, weâ??ve compiled a list of the top 10 hottest shoppers out there â?? ones you wouldnâ??t be ashamed to hang off your arm and ones which come from socially righteous companies. 10. Onya Bags Perhaps the worst thing about fighting the war on plastic is not having an alternative when you do the old spur of the moment thing. Your problems may be solved with the innovative Onya bag â?? it folds into a key-ring sized pouch which, funnily enough, clips onto your keys â?? and is made out of parachute material so itâ??s mightily strong. Weâ??re not sure about the GIANT logo on it though, but for itâ??s convenience itâ??s worth a mention! 9 Hemp Eco Shopper From Sativa Bags In a gorgeous deep red with subtle, printed styling, this bag certainly hits the style nail right on the head. At £7.99 itâ??s nicely priced, and made out of Hemp which is one of the most versatile and beneficial crops to the developing world. 8. Russian Dolls Fairtrade Shopper From Accessorize This cute little number is a bit on the pricey side at £12.00, but we think itâ??s worth it considering the great design. Plus it has a square bottom which means you can fit loads more in it than shoppers with seamed ones, and itâ??s stronger. 7. Doy bags â?? any of their shoppers Doy bags are made from recycled juice packs crafted by a womenâ??s cooperative in the Philippines. Strong, colourful and available in different sizes, these bags not only look great, but purchasing one also has a direct impact on the women making them 6. LOVE Tote Bag By Katharine Hamnett This oversized monster of a shopping bag is perfect for any shopping trip involving a lot ofâ?¦ wellâ?¦ shopping! It looks brill and is 100% organic. The bag is the product of a scheme which aims to help women in Ghana achieve financial independence through producing goods under fair trade conditions. At £6 itâ??s an absolute bargain! 4. Soft Nettle Fabric Shopper By Khola Donâ??t worry, itâ??s not going to punish you with relentless stinging if you put too much in itâ?¦ Nettle can actually be stripped of its nastiness by spinning the internal fibres into a thread, and is a much softer alternative to jute or hemp. At £23.50 itâ??s a bit on the pricey side, but worth it for something a little bit different. 3. Recycled Newspaper Bag Made by a group in Delhi which is committed to rescuing homeless children, this bag is an excellent choice for all of the social shoppers out there. The producers collect the newspapers, laminate them, sew them into bags and then add sturdy straps which go right underneath it for added strength â?? adding to a quirky and unusual look. At £9.95 itâ??s reasonably priced, and with each purchase directly helping more children, this is definitely our number 1 pick.
