Even the most hardened of eco-warriors needs a mobile phone â?? midnight vigils and anti-foresting demonstrations donâ??t organise themselves. Just because you need a phone doesnâ??t mean you have to disregard your duty to the environment â?? eco-friendly phone shoppers can take steps to ensure that they buy one of the â??greenerâ?? mobiles on the market. Mobile phone expert Thomas Newton from independent comparison site www.mobile-phones.co.uk has suggested ways that potential buyers can think green if they are looking to buy a new phone this Christmas. â??You should firstly make sure you choose a phone that you will keep for two or three years,â?? Thomas says. â??One of the main problems is people discarding their phones every year, putting a huge strain on recycling.â?? â??People also waste so much energy recharging their phones. Almost everyone I know leave their phones plugged in even though the battery is charged â?? one person doing this wastes a tiny amount of energy, but if a million people do it, itâ??s a huge and pointless energy drain.â?? Thomas explains that the battery is the key feature that makes phones eco-friendly or not. â??A long battery life means less wasted power, and a replaceable battery means a phone can be kept for longer. Once the battery is dead on an iPhone, for example, it is gone â?? you canâ??t replace it, so the phone is completely unusable. You shouldnâ??t be fooled by the iPhoneâ??s hippy image.â?? The recent Greenpeace â??Guide to Greener Electronicsâ?? noted that Nokia is by far the greenest mobile phone company, rating them 7/10 based on their energy efficiency, recycling measures and various other factors. Samsung and Sony Ericsson came in second and third, scoring 5.7 and 5.3 on the Greenpeace guide. Apple, however, received a lowly 4.1, behind all other mobile developers, bar Motorola.
